Sigiriya Rock Fortress
The Rock of Sigiriya also known as Lion Rock and Citadel in The Sky, was the Royal Citadel of King Kasyapa (479-496 AD). This rock outcrop 180 meters in height was selected for building a citadel for the patricide King Kasyapa who wanted to escape the vengeance of his half brother Mugulan.
The king not only fortified the location with two moats and two ramparts to fortify security but also beautified the enclosed area with pools, waterways, landscaping, ornate constructions and fresco paintings.
