Elephant Transit Home, Udawalawe
The Elephant Orphanage of Pinnawala is one of the most interesting and exciting places to be visited whilst in Sri Lanka.
This unique concept was originally initiated in the year 1975 to offer a home to three baby elephants found abandoned in the wild. With more members joining the family found inured or abandoned in the forests, the number of inmates began to increase. With the fact of breeding within the Orphanage and one of the first babies brought in becoming a grandma, the number of inmates at the Elephant Orphanage has exceeded Sixty.
This is one place where these magnificent animals are not used for any commercial purpose, but enjoy a free life being fed, bathed and pampered.
